No intention to stop pension scheme: EDMC

May 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

It hasn’t disbursed social security pensions in over two years, but the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has said it won’t let its weak financial health lead to discontinuation of the scheme.

The EDMC Standing Committee on Thursday passed a resolution saying that the Rs.1,000 per month pension payments to 30,600 senior citizens, widows and differently-abled will start once it gets the money for the same.

Committee chief Lata Gupta said: “This is a matter of public welfare. The public money’s should be spent on them. So we have no intention of stopping the pension schemes.” The EDMC was dragged to court to explain its stand when NGO Social Jurist filed a PIL regarding non-payment of pensions.
