NGT tells DDA to take steps to curb illegal garbage dumping in lake

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to take requisite steps in curbing illegal dumping of garbage in Neela Hauz Lake.

A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel passed the directions following submissions made by the urban body pertaining to the alleged dumping of garbage in the south Delhi lake.

“According to the report of the DDA, commuters passing through Aruna Asif Ali Marg Road bridge over the lake are dumping plastic bags, bottles, glass framed photographs, polythene bags and other waste including bio-medical waste which is removed by the staff of Neela Hauz Biodiversity park managed by the DDA,” observed the Bench.

The DDA further submitted before the Bench that it had written to the PWD to “arrange fixing of iron meshes and create vertical gardens or to issue NOC to DDA to undertake the work.”

The Bench however, directed the urban body to undertake the steps without delaying the process.

“In view of the damage being caused to the environment by illegal dumping of waste, we direct DDA to undertake the requisite remedial measures without waiting for further response from PWD. If PWD has any objection, it may move this tribunal,” the Bench said.

The green panel in May this year had directed the DDA to furnish a report on the steps to be taken for the rejuvenation of the south Delhi lake.

“The DDA must take necessary steps by way of fencing and preventing dumping of waste. Accordingly, we are of the view that a factual and action taken report needs to be taken from the DDA,” the bench had said in May.
