NGT pulls up Volkswagen

: The Indian arm of German auto major Volkswagen was questioned by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday about why it had not started the recall of the 3,23,700 vehicles for violation of emission norms as promised in December

Meanwhile Volkswagen maintained that it had not installed “cheat device”, a software in diesel cars to manipulate emission tests.

“You announced a recall in December... Why have you not recalled these vehicles till date? What are you doing to rectify the problem in your vehicles?” said a Bench of Justice M. S. Nambiar and expert member B.S. Sajwan.

Volkswagen has been asked to file an affidavit by May 19 stating what action it plans to take with regard to vehicles allegedly fitted with the disputed software. The counsel for Volkswagen stated that recall of vehicles was a long procedure and would take time.

When the Bench asked whether the new vehicles fitted with EA 189 diesel engines were equipped with the software, the counsel sought more time. Advocate Sanjeev Ailawadi, appearing for one of the petitioners, said Volkswagen has been selling faulty cars since 2010 and have, till date, done nothing to rectify the problem.

The matter is listed for May 19.
