New Year jam: Metro work gridlocks traffic across Delhi

January 02, 2015 08:06 am | Updated 08:31 am IST - New Delhi:

Massive vehicular congestion gripped the Capital on Thursday with commuters complaining of jams in Central, South and West Delhi.

While heavy traffic was reported at the Ashram Chowk on Mathura Road and from Naraina to Rajouri Garden due to construction work being undertaken there by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, severe congestion was also reported from the C-Hexagon near India Gate which had a spill-over effect across Central Delhi.

“The entire C-Hexagon was choc-a-bloc with vehicles during the evening rush hour and there were no traffic police personnel to be seen,” said Rakesh Das, a private executive.

“Because of congestion there, traffic was evidently being affected on Ashoka Road and other stretches that lead to the location,” Das added.

Commuters complained of severe congestion on adjacent routes such as Parliament Street, Ferozeshah Road, Mandi House, Lodhi Road, Raisina Road, Mother Teresa Crescent and Shanti Path.

Meanwhile, construction work related to the second phase of the elevated Barapullah flyover by the Public Works Department caused the carriageway from Sewa Nagar crossing to INA to be closed, hence affecting traffic movement on the Aurobindo Marg.

The jam occurred despite the traffic police issuing advisories to commuters asking them to avoid Central Delhi.
