New Tihar D-G likely to be announced on Monday

Outgoing D-G Vimla Mehra was relieved of her duties on Thursday

The announcement of a new Director-General for Tihar Prisons could be made next Monday, sources said. It is learnt that the current Special Commissioner of Police (Administration) Alok Kumar Verma is the frontrunner for the post.

Outgoing D-G Vimla Mehra was relieved of her duties on Thursday after an order was issued by Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung asking her to vacate the post and report to the Delhi Police Commissioner. As of now, DIG Mukesh Prasad is looking after the prison administration.

The Hindu tried to contact the Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi to ask about Ms. Mehra’s next assignment, but he was unavailable for a comment.

Ms. Mehra, a 1978-batch officer, took over the reins from Neeraj Kumar after he left to lead the Delhi Police in 2012.

She is credited with several initiatives that she took during her two-year tenure. This includes the system of making the inmates fill up a feedback form at the time of exit and opening of a restaurant, which is currently being run on a trial basis. However, her stint at Tihar was also marked by some controversies, including the mysterious death of December 16 accused Ram Singh.
