NDMC postpones budget by a month

Code of conduct kicks in after poll date announced

January 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The budget of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has been postponed by about a month as the civic body cannot make any announcements with the model code of conduct having come into effect.

The Corporation was supposed to clear its budget for 2015-2016 on Wednesday, but the date of the Delhi Assembly elections was announced on Monday.

On Tuesday, the civic body decided to postpone the presentation of the budget till after February 10, when the results of the elections to be held on February 7 will be declared.

Leader of the House Mira Aggarwal, who was to give her budget speech on Wednesday, said the model code of conduct would not allow her to make any announcements about new schemes or projects.

“Since we can’t clear any welfare schemes, we have decided to pass our budget after the polls,” said Ms. Aggarwal.

As per norms, the municipal budget has to be cleared before February 15. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation passed its budget on Monday, hours before the polls were announced. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation had passed its budget for the next fiscal on January 9.
