The Delhi Police constable who was shot dead by two alleged bootleggers in Alipur on Monday had grappled with one of the accused, but a hidden firearm took him by surprise and ultimately did him in, said the police.
According to a senior police officer, the incident took place when Karamveer and Delhi Home Guard Surender Singh were on patrolling duty on a motor cycle. Surender was driving while Karamveer was on the pillion.
The officer said the two had received a tip-off that illegal liquor was being smuggled from Haryana on a motorcycle.
“At 12-40 a.m. two men on a motorcycle approached the picket and they were carrying a carton. The policeman signalled them to stop and they followed the instructions. When they were asked to show the content of the box, they tried to drive away. Karamveer had managed to grapple with the pillion rider and he fell from the bike,” said the officer.
The man then took out a country-made firearm concealed under the shawl he had draped and fired at Karamveer.
The assailant and his accomplice then drove away on the motor cycle
Karamveer Singh had joined the force on March 28, 2006. He was posted with the Alipur police station and lived with family at Police Colony in Narela.
Karamveer was rushed to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chander Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Surender told the police that the accused fled towards Jhangola village. Later, when a police team went to Jhangola in search of the assailants, the villagers allegedly pelted stones at them. “A head constable, identified as Joginder Singh, suffered head injury after a stone hit him. He was also taken to the hospital,” the officer added.
