A 24-year-old man wanted in connection with a murder was arrested by the Special Cell on Wednesday from Sitamarhi in Bihar, the police said on Friday.

Bounty

Ajay Kumar Mahto is wanted in connection with a 2013 murder case registered at Nihal Vihar police station. There was a bounty of ₹50,000 on his head, the police added. Mr. Mahto was apprehended from his village in Sitamarhi following a tip-off.

“We received a tip-off on Monday after Mr. Mahto purchased land in Bhavdepur. A team was sent to Sitamarhi. He was spotted in a market on Wednesday and arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P.S. Kushwah.

The police said Mr. Mahto and his associates had allegedly killed their gang member Anil Gupta in July 2013 after an altercation. While Mr. Mahto managed to evade arrest till Wednesday, his associates Pappu Mishra and Pintu Mahto were nabbed much earlier.

“The accused killed Anil over share of loot from various robberies. They lured him with the help of a girl and spiked his drink. Next, they took him near a drain in Vikaspuri, where they slit his wrists and bludgeoned him to death,” said Mr. Kushwah.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police that he had committed several robberies in Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra from 2013 to 2018.
