January 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Work on switching South Delhi’s streetlights to LED lights started in December 2014, while the details of the project were finalised by stakeholders on Friday.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding with Energy Efficiencies Services Ltd (EESL) on Friday, said spokesperson Mukesh Yadav. EESL, a joint venture of the Union Power Ministry’s PSUs, will bear the upfront payments to convert the SDMC’s 1.98 lakh streetlights to the energy-efficient LED variety. The maintenance of the lights will be done by EESL for seven years.

He said the LED lights will reduce the civic body’s power bill by 50 per cent and lead to an annual saving of Rs.37 crore.
