: After a long summer and scorching heat, the monsoon finally arrived in Kolkata on Friday. According to th Regional Meteorological Department in Alipore, the city received 2.3 millimetre of rain during the day.

“The monsoon has entered Kolkata today (Friday). Rain will intensify in the next 48 hours,” the Director of Regional Meteorological Department in Alipore G.C Debnath told The Hindu .

As for the rest of the State, he said that the monsoon has entered parts of Hoogly, Howrah, and East Midnapore and North 24 Parganas districts.

“The southwest monsoon winds have finally struck Kolkata, and the monsoon showers have already begun here from today morning (Friday),” said Mr. Debnath

A low pressure area over the Odisha-Andhra was considered to be the main reason behind the occurrence of the monsoon showers in the city and in the surrounding districts.

It was said to further intensify and turn into a depression by Saturday and fuel the monsoon winds.

The depression was expected to cover major parts of the eastern region such as Jharkhand and Orissa in the next 24 to 48 hours as per the forecast of the Regional Meteorological Department in Alipore.
