Minors were to be handed over to domestic placement agencies

September 18, 2011 11:20 am | Updated 11:20 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Minor girls who were rescued from the clutches of alleged human traffickers from New Delhi Railway Station on Friday were being brought from Jharkhand to be handed over to domestic help placement agencies in the Capital.

It was when the traffickers reached the New Delhi Railway Station along with the children that the crisis management team of non-government organisation Shakti Vahini had intercepted them. “They were travelling in general compartments. We managed to get hold of 13 victims and four traffickers. We suspect that about 80 minors were being brought from Jharkhand on the pretext of lucrative jobs,” said Rishi Kant of Shakti Vahini.

The victims were taken to Lady Hardinge Medical College for examination after which they were shifted to a children's home on the direction of the Child Welfare Committee, Mayur Vihar.

Mr. Kant said the victims belonged to Simdega and Gumla areas of Jharkhand. “A large number of children from these places are being trafficked for placement as domestic helps by illegal agencies. The situation is alarming and requires urgent attention by the authorities in the source areas,” he said, adding that he had contacted the Jharkhand Police seeking assistance in restoring the victims to their families.
