A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide inside Tilak Vihar police post in west Delhi area on Sunday morning.

Her family alleged that their neighbour’s son had kidnapped her as he wanted to marry her. However, the police have ruled out kidnapping. They said the girl reached the police post on her own and did not wish to return home. They were contacting shelter homes for women to accommodate her when she locked herself in one of the rooms at the post and hanged herself.

Officers suspended

Following the incident, Sub-Inspector (SI) Parvesh Kaushik, in-charge of the police post, and constable Manmohan Kaur were taken off duty, while Assistant SI Sushil Kumar, investigating officer, and duty writer head constable K. Badhoriya were suspended.

“All of them failed to perform their duties properly, due to which the girl found an opportunity to commit suicide,” said a police officer.

The police control room received a call from the girl’s family around 10.50 p.m. on July 14.

The family reported a quarrel with the neighbouring family. By the time the police reached the spot, members of both families had sustained minor wounds. They were taken for medical examination. They were later brought to the police post.

Her family members alleged that she was kidnapped by 21-year-old Happy, who wanted to marry her forcibly.

Meanwhile, Happy’s family alleged that he was nowhere to be found. The families started an argument at the police post but were calmed down by the policemen and sent back homes.

At 2.50 a.m., the girl came to the police post again. In her statement, she said her brother and mother had slapped her.

Upset, she visited a gurudwara in Satya Nagar. The girl told the police that she did not wish to return home. Her family members came to the police post once again.

Youth’s statement

“There were around 30-40 people inside the police post and only four police officers to control the mob that was turning hostile. In the meantime, the girl, who was in another room, locked herself and ended her life by hanging from the ceiling fan. The police recorded the statement of the Happy, who claimed they were in a relationship for the last one-and-a-half years. The police are verifying his claims. A magisterial probe is under way. We have ruled out kidnapping,” said DCP (West) Vijay Kumar.
