Minor fire at Russian Embassy

January 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Minutes after US President Barack Obama arrived in the Capital, a minor fire broke out at the Russian Embassy in Central Delhi’s Chanakyapuri on Sunday morning.

According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), the blaze was reported from a 200 square-yard building on the ground floor of the Russian facility currently functioning as a mini health club around 10.05 a.m. “We received a call about the incident and despatched eight fire tenders to the spot. Since it fell on the route which had been sanitised for Mr. Obama, there was no traffic and we were able to reach on time,” said a DFS official.

The DFS said the fire was extinguished within half an hour and no casualties, or even injuries to anyone, were reported.

“At the moment it seems to have been triggered by a short circuit and spread as it engulfed the furniture placed in the vicinity,” the official added.
