Mr. Hussain, accompanied by officials of the Transport Department, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the Delhi Traffic Police, conducted checks on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border at Ghazipur from 11.30 p.m. on Friday till 2 a.m. on Saturday, the statement said.

The inspections were meant to check the compliance by vehicles entering Delhi at a time the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), an emergency pollution-control plan, has been implemented.

The Minister and the team of officials stopped heavy vehicles, checking their date of registration, pollution under-control (PUC) certificates, destination and overloading status, the statement said. “Many” vehicles were found to be violating norms, for which the Transport Department issued challans, the statement added.

“Most remarkable finding of the inspection was that the Minister and his team stopped 10 vehicles of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation and they were found to be carrying open municipal solid waste to be dumped at a landfill site,” the statement said.

One of the vehicles that were carrying uncovered construction materials was seized by the Transport Department on the spot, the statement said.

The Minister also instructed the DPCC to impose penalties on the EDMC for violating the Solid Waste Management Rules.
