Two persons allegedly involved in over 100 cases of chain snatching at gunpoint have been arrested, the police said on Wednesday. A goldsmith has also been arrested for allegedly receiving the stolen property.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Gurugram Crime Branch Anti-Snatching unit, led by Inspector Sandeep Kumar, laid a trap in Najafgarh on Monday and arrested the snatchers. The two had come to a workshop in the area to get a car repaired.
They accused were identified as Sanjay alias Rajesh, and Sandeep alias Sandy. Sanjay, who hails from Rohtak in Haryana, resides in Narela. Sandeep, who belongs to Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, stays on rent in Delhi’s Rohini.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sumit Kuhar said at a press conference that Sanjay and Sandeep had committed at least 40 snatchings in Gurugram over the past six months. The two would come to Gurugram on a stolen motorcycle, and carry a firearm to commit the thefts. The accused would issued death threats when they faced resistance and flee on their two-wheeler.
The motorcycle they used was allegedly stolen from Delhi last year. The accused would hide the motorcycle after committing the crimes, said the police.
Sanjay told the police during interrogation that he was involved in 100 cases of snatchings in Delhi and Gurugram, besides a few cases of murder and attempt-to-murder. He would never attend court hearings after he was out on bail and is a proclaimed offender in over 30 cases in Delhi and Gurugram.
The police have also arrested Joginder alias Jeetu, a goldsmith, for allegedly receiving the stolen property from the duo. He is a resident of Chhawla in Delhi.
