A 21-year-old medical student died while his friend was injured when their ‘speeding’ car turned turtle after hitting an electricity pole in Delhi University’s North Campus on Sunday morning, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad said the deceased, Himanshu Sharma, from Sarai Rohilla, was pursuing medical studies from a private university.

From fest to joyride

On Saturday, he had gone to meet his friend Abhinav Prasad when they planned to attend a fest at a college in North Campus.

After that, the two friends headed for a joyride, the police said, adding that the car, owned by Himanshu, was being driven by Abhinav.

However, an eye witness said there were four people in the car, including two women, who fled the spot after the accident.

“A few passers-by and I rescued the four occupants from the car. The window on Himanshu’s side was open and due to the impact, his head came under the car but the other three victims were fine. The two girls fled from the scene after taking a lift. Abhinav was rushed to a hospital,” said the eyewitness. A police officer said the accident was reported at 12.15 a.m.

“It seems that the car was speeding when the driver lost balance and hit an electric pole outside Daulat Ram College and turned turtle. A passer-by had called the police,” said the officer.

They were rushed to a hospital in a police van. “Himanshu was declared brought dead while Abhinav is undergoing treatment. Their families have been informed about the incident,” added the police officer.

The police said a case under Indian Penal Code Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) has been registered.

They will question Abhinav after the doctors declare him fit for a statement. He has also been examined to ascertain if he was drunk at that time, they added.
