Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari paid a courtesy visit to his counterpart from the Congress, Sheila Dikshit, at her residence here on Saturday.

According to Delhi BJP media co-convener Neelkant Bakshi, Mr. Tiwari, who was successfully able to defend his home turf, the North East Delhi seat, against the former three-time Delhi Chief Minister in the recently concluded Lok Sabha poll, decided to call on her after learning about her ill health. “The two leaders acknowledged that political rivals can have friendly and harmonious relations; Mr. Tiwari also told Ms. Dikshit that he considers her with the same regard as his own mother,” Mr. Bakshi said about the 20-minute meeting between the two leaders adding that Mr. Tiwari also took her blessings in addition to enquiring about her health.

Ms. Dikshit was defeated by a margin of 3.66 lakh votes by Mr. Tiwari in the triangular contest on the North East Delhi seat. The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Dilip Pandey came a distant third and lost his deposit.

According to statistics, Mr. Tiwari got 7,87,799 votes capturing 53.9% of the total vote share on the seat compared to 4,21,697 votes constituting 28.85% of Ms. Dikshit’s vote share. Mr. Pandey, with 1,90,856 votes, that is, 13.06% of the votes forfeited his deposit.

‘Scared internally’

In the run-up to the election, during a press conference, Mr. Tiwari had admitted he was “scared internally” of facing Ms. Dikshit and later termed the contest on the seat among the “most interesting in the country”.

“I respect and welcome her [Ms. Dikhit] into the fray. Her entry has made this one of the most significant political battles in the country...as far as the other party’s candidate is concerned, I have been looking for him [Mr. Pandey] with a microscope [in terms of his campaign and public support] but he is nowhere to be seen,” Mr. Tiwari had said, adding that the “real” contest in Delhi was between the BJP and the Congress.
