A 32-year-old man allegedly conned a woman from Madhya Pradesh into giving him ₹6 lakh by promising her marriage and a job in the Indian Railways. The accused, identified as Ranjit SIngh, has been arrested from south Delhi’s Neb Sarai for rape and cheating.

Posed as divorcee

The 38-year-old victim, a divorcee from Ujjain, allegedly met the accused on a matrimonial website a couple of months ago where he had posed as a divorced man himself. The police said that after realising that the woman was in need of a job, he pretended to fall in love with her, coaxed her into coming to Delhi and giving him ₹10 lakh to arrange a job for her in the Railways.

Meeting in Delhi

The woman told the police that when she told him that she only has ₹6 lakh, the accused responded that he’ll pitch in ₹4 lakh as the two will eventually get married. On May 1, the woman came to Delhi after which Singh took her to his rented accommodation in Devli area. “The two got intimate. She gave him the money and went back to Ujjain the next day,” said a senior police official.

Demands more money

The woman realised she was being conned when Singh asked her for ₹2 lakh more, without which he won’t be able to get her the job and the entire amount will go to waste.

The woman then came back to Delhi on May 8 to file a complaint and narrate her story after which an FIR was registered against Singh under Section 376 (punishment for rape) and 420 (cheating). The accused was arrested from his accommodation in Devli two days later on May 10.

“For the two days, the girl didn’t inform him that she was filing a case against him so he could be easily nabbed,” said the officer.

Different name

Upon investigation, the police learnt that his real name is Rahul Bhardwaj and he lives with his wife and child in the same accommodation in Devli where he took the victim. “He had sent his wife and child to her mother’s house,” said the officer.

The police have found Bhardwaj was involved previously in similar cases where he targeted divorced women on matrimonial websites.

Mr Wadhwa had put ₹3 lakh in his bank account which has been seized by the police. He had given ₹3 lakh to his mother residing in Uttar Pradesh’s Ferozabad who was found to be absconding.
