A Muslim man was allegedly beaten up by members of a right-wing organisation on Monday afternoon at a Ghaziabad court for attempting to marry a Hindu woman.

The police said 26-year-old Sahil Khan from Bhopal works at an LED manufacturing company in Noida. Sahil had met the woman, who belongs to Bijnor district in western Uttar Pradesh and works at a mobile manufacturing unit in Noida, through a common friend.

“They fell in love and decided to get married. However, their parents were against the decision. The woman belongs to the Rajput community, whereas Sahil is a Muslim. The couple decided to get married at a Ghaziabad court after their friend told them it was a safe and easy process,” a police officer said.

The couple went to a Ghaziabad court to meet an advocate on Monday. While discussing the procedure, a group of people barged into the advocate’s chamber and started beating Sahil.

A police team on patrol duty rescued the couple and took them to Sihani Gate police station. The mob damaged the cab hired by the couple.

Refuse to file complaint

Though the couple refused to register a complaint, a police officer registered a case against unknown persons under his own complaint. “We have identified two suspects, Navneet and Vinod Chaudhary, as accused in the FIR. They are absconding. We are verifying their details. An FIR has been registered against several other unknown persons under IPC Section 147 [rioting], 323 [causing hurt] and 427 [mischief causing damage to the property] at Sihani Gate police station,” said Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police Akash Tomar.

A video of the assault on the court premises has gone viral on social media. The police said the mob did not assault the woman. She was handed over to the police team.

Medical examination

Sahil was sent for medical examination, after which the couple went back to their respective families.
