Man, nephew attacked with acid

A motorcycle mechanic and his nephew were attacked with acid following a scuffle with a friend at Central Delhi’s Nabi Karim on Saturday evening, the police said.

The victims, identified as Sukhdev (30) and Vipin, suffered burns on their face and torso, and are undergoing treatment at the Lady Hardinge Medical College.

Doctors told the police that the duo’s condition was stable.

“Neelu (30), the main accused, has been arrested and booked for throwing acid. He was also injured because he was in an inebriated condition at the time,” said a senior police officer.

According to Sukhdev, he was invited for drinks by Neelu to a Paharganj by-lane on Saturday evening. Soon an argument broke out which turned into a fight. Neelu apparently withdrew from the fight and left the spot after warning Sukhdev of dire consequences. Two hours later, while Sukhdev was heading home, he was waylaid by Neelu who insisted on picking a fight with him again.

“This time, Sukhdev was supported by his nephew Vipin, who happened to be nearby. An infuriated Neelu withdrew once again, but returned in a few minutes with a bottle containing acid,” said the officer.

Neelu allegedly opened the bottle and emptied it on Sukhdev and Vipin who were taken by surprise.

Even as Neelu fled, local residents gathered on hearing the cries of the victims. One of them called the police. The duo’s statements were recorded by the police on Sunday morning. Several teams were formed to apprehend Neelu.

“We arrested him later on Sunday evening. He has been booked under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code,” the officer added.
