A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his aunt and injuring his mother at their residence in north Delhi’s Burari on Tuesday. Though the police suspect the accused is mentally unfit, documents on his mental health are unavailable.

Battling for life

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad said the mother is battling for her life in the hospital.

The police said the accused had asked his wife and 17-year-old daughter not to step out of the house without his permission. However, the mother and daughter had to go out for work since he is unemployed.

“He returned home around 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday, and fought with his wife and daughter for staying out the whole day. His mother and aunt intervened. They were on the mother and daughter’s side,” said a senior police officer.

Hit with brick

The accused got enraged during the fight. He went out of the house to get a brick and hit his mother on the face with it. When the aunt tried to help her sister, the accused hit the aunt with an earthen pot lying nearby. The accused then tried to hurt his wife, daughter and four-year-old son.

Case registered

Locals gathered at the spot and one of them called the police. The five injured persons were rushed to a hospital, where the aunt was declared dead. A murder case was registered and the accused was arrested from the locality, the police said.

Family members told the police that he made furniture earlier but stopped recently. He had been behaving aggressively for a week but the family did not know the reason for his behaviour, they told police.
