A 22-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by five men in north Delhi’s Sadar Bazar on Thursday night for not touching their feet.

All the five accused are absconding, the police said on Friday. Four of the accused have a criminal record, including murder.

The victim, Shanky, was a neighbour of one of the accused. He was stabbed nearly 20 times in front of his wife, the police said. Shanky was taken to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

A passing e-rickshaw driver tried to intervene but was also attacked. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital, said the police.

The police said they received a call about a scuffle at Gali Peepal Wali in Sadar Bazar at 11.55 p.m.

Attacked with knife

“Shanky was coming home on Thursday night when his neighbour Vikas, who was sitting outside his home with his friends, stopped Shanky and asked him why he did not touch his feet. Following Shanky’s reply, the two got into an argument and started fighting. Vikas and his friends then attacked Shanky with a ‘chopper’ and a knife,” said a senior police officer.

“The victim’s wife is an eyewitness and has identified all the accused. We have recovered the bloodstained knife and chopper from the spot. Police teams have been formed to nab the accused,” said the officer.

“The accused have been identified as Vikas, Ajay, Surjeet, Ranbir and Ajay [I]. They all live in the same area. Vikas is a known bad character. He was released on bail on April 27 in a 2017 murder case. Surjeet, who is serving time in an attempt to murder case, was out on parole for 19 days till May 19,” said the officer.

“Ajay and Ranbir were earlier booked under cases of theft and robberies. Ajay [I] does not have a criminal record,” he said.

Investigation so far has revealed that Vikas knew Shanky’s elder brother but they had a falling out, said the officer.
