A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting 18 vehicles on fire in south Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar a day before Diwali, police said on Thursday. The accused was under the influence of alcohol during the time of the incident, said the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar said that the accused has been identified as Vijay Shukla, a resident of Uttarakhand, who was arrested on Wednesday.

The incident was caught on CCTV camera wherein the accused, who appeared to be drunk, set ablaze four cars and 14 motorcycles after taking out petrol from a bike. During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police that he was drunk at the time of the incident.

“He is a vagabond and addicted to alcohol. His father died a few years ago while his mother and two unmarried sisters live together somewhere in Delhi but they do not keep him with them due to his habit of drugs,” the DCP said.
