A 26-year-old man and his accomplice were arrested on Monday for allegedly killing his parents at their residence in south-east Delhi’s Jamia Nagar in April, the police said on Tuesday. One of the accused is absconding, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal said Abdul Rehman and his accomplices Nadeem and Guddu smothered Abdul’s parents, builder Shamim Ahmed (55) and Taslim Bano (50), on April 28. Efforts are on to nab Guddu, he said.

“Abdul’s parents refused to give him money despite his constant demands. He also wanted to marry his girlfriend from Kanpur but his parents were against the idea,” Mr. Biswal said.

The officer said Abdul allegedly promised to pay Nadeem and Guddu ₹2.5 lakh for the murders. The police did not suspect foul play in the case initially as the main door was locked from inside. Abdul, who informed the police about his parents, had told them that he and his uncle broke open the door after his parents failed to open it.

Abdul had told the police that he was out till late at night and called his uncle for help when his parents failed to open the door. They spotted the bodies after they broke open the door together.

“We initially suspected that the couple had either killed themselves or were murdered by someone they knew since the entry was friendly. Only Abdul had access to the house,” Mr. Biswal said.

The post-mortem was conducted at AIIMS. The report received by the police on May 19 stated that they had died due to asphyxiation by smothering. A murder case was registered and Abdul was called in for questioning again.

“There were discrepancies in his version of events. He broke down during sustained interrogation and confessed to the murders,” Mr. Biswal said.

‘Unemployed, addict’

Abdul allegedly told the police that he was unemployed since the past one year.

He said he quit his job at a call centre due to his addiction to drugs and that his parents refused to give him money. He had met his Kanpur-based girlfriend via Facebook in 2016.

They wanted to marry but his parents were against the relationship, the police said. He married another woman in 2017 but got divorced in 2018.

“He decided to kill his parents for their property so that he could meet both his and his girlfriend’s expenses,” Mr. Biswal said.

On the night of the incident, he entered the house around 11 p.m., called Nadeem and Guddu, and smothered his sleeping parents.
