Man gets life term for murder

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A Delhi court has sentenced a rickshaw puller to life imprisonment for murdering a fruit seller with a knife. It held him guilty on the basis of eye witness accounts by a Delhi Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a constable.

While chasing the victim after attacking him with a knife, accused Munna was shouting “tere karan mere sare aam sar gaye hain (because of you, my mangoes have rotten)’’.

“It is evident from the testimonies of prosecution witnesses ASI Om Prakash and constable Kuldeep that they are the eye-witnesses of the occurrence. The ASI categorically stated that when he was patrolling along with constable Kuldeep, they saw victim Chhotu smeared with blood and was running while being chased by the accused wielding a blood-stained knife.’’

The two police personnel had apprehended the accused at the spot along with the blood-stained knife. “It has been proved by way of the oral testimony of prosecution witnesses coupled with the medical as well as scientific evidence that the accused had committed the murder of Chhotu,’’ the court said.

The court also rejected a plea for a lenient punishment. The convict’s counsel had argued that he has three daughters to take care of and has not committed any crime in the past.
