After a woman took to Twitter on Monday alleging that a man flashed her at the HUDA City Centre metro station complex three days ago, the Gurugram police have registered a first information report on charges of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. The culprit is yet to be identified.
The woman was climbing down the escalator after stepping out from a garments retail store inside the metro station complex on June 14 around 9.30 p.m. when the man flashed her. “I slapped him hard and he charged back at me with abuses. And onlookers kept looking at my face standing still. I shouted and called for help and police, no one came forward [sic],” said one of her tweets.
‘Police did not respond’
The culprit again flashed her before fleeing. She claimed that she went towards the police post, but it was closed. “The same night, I texted on Gurugram Police’s Facebook messenger. They read it but never reverted. I sent the text to the DMRC and I was immediately called for identification on CCTV footage, which I did on Sunday,” the woman said.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Navdeep Virk, through a tweet on Tuesday, said the Gurugram Police had taken cognisance of the matter and had proactively registered an FIR on the basis of narration of incidents by the victim on social media. The case has been registered at metro police station. Later, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Against Women) Usha Kundu with her team visited the scene of crime and coordinated with the DMRC for collection of evidences.
The woman, however, tweeted saying that the decision to file an FIR should be hers and she was scared.
Gurugram police spokesperson Subhash Boken said that the FIR was registered late on Monday evening, but the woman had not joined the investigation so far. He said that efforts were being made to contact the woman to seek details about the matter.
