Man dies after being hit with bat, 2 minors apprehended

Victim had an argument with the boys who were playing cricket on the road

A 22-year-old was killed after allegedly being hit with a cricket bat by two minors following a minor argument on Tuesday evening in north Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi. Angad Kumar was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries. The minors have been apprehended.

Angad was a delivery boy at a nearby eatery and resided in a rented room at Sita Saran colony. He was sitting outside his uncle’s home when the minors hit him on the head. His aunt Geeta Devi (45), who was inside the house at the time of the incident, said Angad had come over after meeting a few relatives when he was attacked.

Hit by ball

“He had gone to Lal Bagh to meet a cousin. When he returned, some boys were playing cricket on the road. The ball hit him on the stomach. He warned them and asked them to play safely. At this, they threatened to hit him with a bat if he did not leave,” said Ms. Devi.

Angad purportedly told them, “Maar ke dikha [Just try and hit me],” and walked back to the house. He asked his uncle Ganga Ram (50) for some oil for the bruise on his stomach, said his cousin Ramesh.

“That’s when the boys came and hit him on the right side of the head. Angad fell on the ground and started bleeding from the nose. I ran out of the house on hearing the commotion. He was unconscious. My son rushed him to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital on a scooter,” said the Ms. Devi.

‘Instigated by mate’

Meanwhile, the two minors fled, said the police.

A neighbour alleged that the boys were instigated to hit Angad by a playmate. However, the police denied to comment on the allegation.

A senior police officer said the minors, a 16-year-old Class XI student and 17-year-old Class XII student, were hiding at Roshanara Bagh and were apprehended on Tuesday night.

“A case has been registered on charges of murder. They were presented before the Magistrate on Wednesday and sent to an observation home,” said the officer.
