A man allegedly attempted to rape a 25-year-old lawyer in a park in south-east Delhi’s Amar Colony on September 20, the police said on Sunday. The woman had gone to the park for evening walk at the time of the incident.

She managed to escape and reported the incident to the police, who later arrested accused Amar Singh from the park.

The woman narrated the ordeal in a post on social media. She alleged that she was dragged and sexually harassed in the park around 7.30 p.m.

‘Delay in filing FIR’

She claimed that an FIR was not registered till 1 a.m., adding that it was only lodged after she spoke to the SHO and narrated the ordeal. The lawyer said an arrest memo was made but the time of filing of the FIR was changed in the copy she received.

“My phone was broken, fingers were scratched and I sustained injuries on the leg,” she claimed in her social media post. She also posted pictures and a video of the incident.

The woman alleged that police officers behaved “insensitively” while escorting her to AIIMS for a medical check-up.

“We have registered a case under IPC Sections 354A [sexual harassment] and 376 [attempt to rape] at Amar Colony police station. Accused Amar hails from Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. He has been sent to judicial custody,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.

Mr. Biswal said the case is under investigation. The statement of the victim has been recorded before the Magistrate, he added.
