A man has been arrested for allegedly robbing and killing a 30-year-old designer for resisting robbery in south-east Delhi’s Okhla industrial area, the police said on Wednesday.

They said the police control room received a call on May 26 regarding an injured man lying near the Domestic Container Depot in Okhla Phase-II. The police rushed to the spot and took the injured man to AIIMS. He was declared brought dead.

“A bank deposit slip and an e-mail id written on it was found on this person. He was identified as Arvind Singh Chauhan, who belonged to Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh. He lived in Delhi’s Sagarpur and worked as a designer in a printing press in Okhla Phase-II. His mobile phone and shoes were missing,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.

A case of murder was registered.

14 stab wounds

“The body was handed over to his relatives after the post-mortem. There were 14 stab wounds on the body,” said Mr. Biswal.

During investigation, a team led by inspector Mukesh Walia mounted technical surveillance, and Arvind’s mobile phone was recovered from the possession of Okhla resident Manoj. He told the police that he had purchased it for ₹3,500 from Asgar, who lives in the same area. When Asgar was questioned, he told the police that he had purchased it for ₹3,000 from Rajender. He was traced and questioned too. He told the police that he bought it from Sujeet, who lives in the same area, for ₹2,500. The police then traced Sujeet, who said he had bought it for ₹2,100 from Sandeep alias Bulli, who lives in an Okhla jhuggi.

“Sandeep broke down during interrogation and confessed to robbing and killing Arvind. Besides a knife used by him, bloodstained clothes and shoes belonging to Arvind were recovered from Sandeep’s house,” said Mr. Biswal.

Accused is an alcoholic

The accused told the police that he is an alcoholic. Around 10 p.m. the day of the incident, he wanted to buy alcohol but did not have any money on him. He went to a nearby meat shop and stole a butcher’s knife. After that he went towards container depot looking for a target.

“Sandeep spotted Arvind, who was under the influence of alcohol. He tried to snatch his mobile phone, but Arvind resisted. Sandeep panicked and stabbed Arvind 14 times. He fled the spot after robbing Arvind’s mobile phone and shoes,” Mr. Biswal said.
