Man appointed guardian of wife suffering from dementia

May 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A man has been appointed guardian of his wife, who is suffering from dementia, for all purposes by a Delhi court, which noted that the woman was not in a position to manage even her daily chores.

Additional District Judge Ajay Goel allowed the man’s plea on the ground that the woman had movable and immovable property and several bank accounts, for which she was required to be represented through a guardian.

The court had also sought a report from the medical board of Institute of Human Behaviour and Applied Sciences (IHBAS) and the doctors opined that she was suffering from dementia.

“In view of the report filed by IHBAS, it can be said that the mentally ill person (woman) is a case of dementia and she is not in a capacity to manage herself and her day-to-day affairs. Therefore, in view of above, petitioner (husband) is hereby appointed as guardian of mentally ill lady for all intent and purposes. Necessary certificate be issued in this regard...,” the judge said. — PTI
