A 50-year-old woman, who was employed at a residence in Green Park as a domestic help, died of asphyxiation due to a fire on Wednesday afternoon, the police said. Along with the woman, a 72-year-old man residing at the same house was trapped, but rescued.
“The victim has been identified as Mamta Biswas, a native of Barapullah in West Bengal. She was employed as a full-time domestic help by Abhijeet Banerjee, an economics professor at a Delhi college,” said a senior police officer.
According to the Delhi Fire Service, their control room was intimated about the incident around 1 p.m. A short-circuit in an air-conditioner at one of the bedrooms is suspected to have triggered the fire.
Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Fire fighters learnt from the neighbours that the maid and the professor’s father, N R Banerjee, were trapped inside the burning house. The fire fighters managed to pull out the old man, but Mamta was beyond their reach. .
“She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, but was declared brought dead. There were no external injuries on the victim’s body, thus suggesting that she died of asphyxiation,” the officer said.
