As the Opposition parties sharpened their attack on the Samajwadi Party Government over the poor law and order situation, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav has claimed that the law and order situation in the State is better. Quick to draw comparisons with the other States, Mr. Yadav said the law and order situation in the States, which claim to have a better record, was bad. He said the schemes launched by the State police have been lauded by the Union Home Minister.
Mr. Yadav said the incidents were only highlighted by the media and the action taken by the police were not given weightage. “This affected the image of the police,” the Chief Minister said.
New crime methods
Speaking at the launch of U.P. police services for public safety at his residence on Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister dwelled on the new methods adopted by the criminals for executing a crime. “The police will have to improve and change their style of functioning in reference to crime control as the methods of executing a crime have undergone changes”, he said.
Mr. Yadav referred to the measures taken by the State Government towards the modernisation of police force. “The ultra-modern police control room in Kanpur has become functional whereas the one in Lucknow would be ready soon,” the Chief Minister said. Adding that CCTV cameras are being installed in the cities, Mr. Yadav said steps have been initiated towards imparting better training to the police personnel along with the availability of resources.
