Lajpat Nagar heist accused caught after high drama

Two others manage to flee after opening fire at the police

One of the accused absconding in the Rs.7.36-crore Lajpat Nagar heist was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police following a shoot-out at Sultanpuri in Outer Delhi on Monday afternoon. Two other accused, however, managed to flee after opening fire at the police team.

The arrested man has been identified as Pradeep alias Machhender.

So far, 11 people, including a juvenile and a Gurgaon constable, have been arrested in connection with the robbery that took place on January 28.

“We received a tip-off on Monday that Pradeep, infamous for robberies and dacoities in Outer Delhi, will come to Sultanpuri along with two of his associates, identified as Amit and Arjun, to meet his contact in an Innova car. Immediately, a trap was laid in the area and his signalled to stop. After noticing the police, the car occupants whipped out their pistols and opened fire at the cops,” said a police officer.

As the accused were firing indiscriminately, the police team got in their vehicle and started chasing them. In a bid to nab the fleeing accused, the policemen retaliated and fired at the wheels of the targeted vehicle. They managed to puncture the tyres of the Innova, forcing it to stop. The policemen then approached the vehicle and overpowered Pradeep. However, Amit and Arjun managed to give them a slip, the officer added.

The driver of the Innova vehicle has also been taken into custody. On a search of the vehicle, the police recovered a pistol and some cash.

The police said that it was Pradeep who had hatched the entire conspiracy with the assistance of some of the other accused, including Shakti Naydu and Ajay.
