Labourer killed, one hurt after accidentally falling into pit

Accident happened in Outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar

A 22-year-old labourer was killed and another injured after they accidentally fell into a pit they had dug in outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar on Friday evening.

The deceased was identified as Ravi Kumar. The injured, Shiv Dutt (19), is from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, said the police.

Police received information about the incident around 5.30 p.m. It was learnt that the two were digging a pit, said the police, adding that the work was initially assigned to the Delhi Jal Board, which later passed it to a private company.

“The labourers were standing beside the 16-foot-deep hole... the surface was not solid and they slipped and fell into the pit and got submerged in the sand,” said Gaurav Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North).

The victims were rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital where Ravi was declared brought dead, while Shiv suffered minor injuries.
