The kingpin of gang, who was hiding in Chennai after committing robberies in the Capital, was arrested on Sunday, the police said.

Two cases

“Mani Kandan alias Don, a resident of city’s Madrasi Camp in Jal Vihar, is wanted in connection with two cases of robbery, which he committed in Lajpat Nagar. On June 29, during patrolling, the beat officers gathered information about the accused. He was arrested from Jal Vihar Bus Terminal,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.

On February 8, two cases of robbery were registered at Lajpat Nagar police station.

In the first case, the victim, driver of an IAS officer, was beaten with a baton and robbed in Lajpat Nagar. Another man was robbed in the same locality that day.

In both cases, the accused robbed the mobile phones and cash near Lajpat Nagar’s Jal Vihar, the police said.

During investigation, the police arrested one Kumar, a resident of Madrasi Camp, and apprehended a juvenile. They recovered the mobile phones and cash from their possession.

“This lead to the arrest of Kandan, the kingpin of the gang, who was absconding at that time. The police had filed a chargesheet against Kumar and final report against the juvenile. A non-bailable warrant and proclaimed offender proceedings were issued against Kandan by the Saket Court,” said Mr. Biswal.

During interrogation, Kandan told the police that his parents are from Chennai but he was born and brought up in Delhi.

Kandan, a school dropout, became addicted to liquor and started committing petty thefts to meet his needs. Eventually, he roped in boys from his locality for the same. He fled to Chennai after the robberies in February. The police arrested him after he returned to Delhi a few days ago.
