Kapashera school principal arrested for boy’s death

The principal of the municipal school at Kapashera in south-west Delhi, where a five-year-old boy drowned in a septic tank this past Wednesday, has been arrested.

Rekha Kakkar was arrested on Tuesday afternoon by the Delhi Police on charges of causing death by negligence. She had been suspended by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) following a preliminary enquiry. However, since the offence is bailable, she was released within a few hours.

“The findings of the report [SDMC] corroborated the statements already recorded,” a senior police officer said.

Preliminary enquiries by the police and the SDMC have suggested that the school authorities had failed to cover the septic tank despite being alerted.

The victim Ankit Kumar, a Class I student, was returning after using the washroom when he fell into the open septic tank. The body was fished out at least an hour after the incident.
