Kanhaiya, Umar, not anti-national, says Hindu Sant Mahasabha

Amid accusations by the rank and file of the BJP that JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was “anti-national,” the student leader found an unlikely supporter on Monday.

The Hindu Sant Mahasabha, an affiliate of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, said Mr. Kumar was innocent.

Claiming that the BJP government was trying to make Mr. Kumar a scapegoat, Hindu Sant Mahasabha president Swami Chakrapani Maharaj said the Modi government was trying to “exploit” the issue of nationalism like it exploited Ram mandir.”

“The BJP propaganda against Kanhaiya, Umar [Khalid] and Anirban [Bhattacharya] was so strong that it made me angry. But when I followed the case closely I realised that the allegations against them were baseless as there was just no evidence to declare them anti-national.”

“Quite frankly, most of the people were swayed by the BJP propaganda. It is quite shameless and completely wrong to brand innocent students as anti-national when their views are completely within the purview of the Constitution,” he said.

The support for the student leader came a day after Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray backed Mr. Kumar.
