The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) on Wednesday submitted a letter to the Chairman, Committee on Petitions of Lok Sabha through CPI(M) MP Jitendra Choudhury on “violation of reservation policy in JNU”.
In the petition, the JNUSU said, “Clauses in the Admission Policy and Procedure 2018-19 [Annexure 1] has made written examination a qualifying paper and viva is the sole criteria for selection.”
It added that a committee constituted by the varsity in 2016 to study discrimination in the admission process recommended reduction of viva marks from 30 to 15 to mitigate the discrimination pattern. The JNUSU alleged that the university has violated fundamental rights, the Central Education Institutions (Reservation in Admissions) Act 2006 and SC/ST Atrocities Act 1989 and urged the committee to intervene and restore the policy.
“We urge the Petition Committee to prevail upon the Vice-Chancellor to restore the reservation policy for the admission to the PhD, and MPhil/PhD programmes of JNU and to protect the rights of candidates belonging to the SC/ST/OBC/PWD categories in compliance to the Central Education Institutions (Reservation in Admissions) Act 2006,” the students wrote in the letter.
