JNUSU disrupting security checks, official work: varsity

Students’ Union accuses administration of ‘harassing’ students

The Jawaharlal Nehru University on Thursday accused the Students’ Union of creating disturbance on campus by disrupting security checks and routine official work of the office staff or hostel administrative officers.

However, the JNUSU blamed the administration for “harassing” students.

“While it will be appreciated that JNUSU office-bearers help the security staff by being vigilant about miscreants who may intend to cause disturbance, they must realise that obstructing varsity officials or its security from doing their duty is not only against the rules but also damages the ethos which guide the stakeholders of this institution to live in harmony and peace,” the JNU Registrar said in a statement.

‘Wanton raids’

The JNUSU responded saying that students were being “harassed” by wardens and security personnel in the name of security, and that the union was against the “wanton” raids taking place across the university.

Checks and crackdown by security personnel started after violence on campus on Monday following the JNUSU polls. The JNUSU accused the administration of “not entering into a dialogue with it” but choosing to make unsubstantiated allegations and statements instead, which “erode the trust of the student community on the JNU administration in the restoration of normal democratic functioning”.

The union demanded an end to checks and security measures, and withdrawal of circulars with immediate effect, besides inviting the JNUSU for a meeting with the administration at the earliest.
