An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was targeted by snatchers at Kashmere Gate when he was about to board a bus on Wednesday night, the police said.

One of the snatchers was caught by the public at the spot while another managed to flee, the police said.

They said that IRS Vijay Babu Vasanta is posted in Dehradun and his family lives in Delhi. He had come to the city to visit his family and was leaving on Wednesday.

A family member dropped him outside the bus terminal at 9 p.m. Two men on a scooty snatched his mobile phone while he was walking to board a bus to Dehradun. Before they could flee, Mr. Vasanta shouted for help and ran after their scooty. The rider lost control and the snatchers fell from the two-wheeler. The pillion rider was caught by the public while the other managed to flee the spot. The accused was handed over to the police for further investigation.

Monika Bhardwaj, DCP (North), said that the arrested person was identified as Sunny, a resident of Paharganj. He was previously involved in at least ten cases of snatching and theft.

“The snatched phone was recovered from the arrested accused. The scooty was found to be stolen from a location in Delhi a few days back, the police said. The other accused involved in the case has been identified and will be arrested soon,” said Ms. Bhardwaj.
