Inter-State gang of auto thieves busted

Accused stole vehicles in Delhi and sold them in Meerut

Members of a Meerut-based gang of car thieves have been arrested, the Delhi Police said on Sunday. They have recovered a number of vehicles which were stolen from the Capital.

The accused were identified as Javed (22), Asim Mansuri (36) and Shakir (20), all are residents of Nishadi Gate in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, the police said.

A senior police officer said the gang regularly travelled to Delhi to steal vehicles and then sold it in Meerut.

On a tip-off

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Harendra Singh said they received a tip-off on June 23 stating that few auto thieves were planning to strike Sarai Rohilla.

“An eight-member team was formed and pickets were raised. During checking of vehicles, the police team noticed three persons on a scooter in Padam Nagar. When the police intercepted them, the trio tried to flee the spot. They were all overpowered and arrested,” Mr. Singh said.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had stolen two-wheelers from Delhi and sold them in Meerut to make easy money.

The police also extracted information leading to the recovery of two scooters and one motorbike from Sindhora Kalan Park and Loni in Ghaziabad, the Additional DCP said.
