Students of Delhi University’s (DU) St. Stephens College claimed that controversial quotes were found written on the door of a chapel within the colleges premises. Later on Saturday, they said that the quotes were removed by the authorities.
“On Friday, certain controversial graffiti was found on the door of the chapel. We have no clue about who did it or what time it has happened. The college authorities have held no discussions with us,” said Konda Sai, president of the college student’s union. “The quotes, however, were removed by the college authorities on Saturday” Mr. Sai added.
While students claimed that quotes like “Mandir Yahi Banega” were found , no complaint was registered by the college authorities. Nandita Narain, president of Staff Association of St. Stephens College said, “The timing of the incident is quite worrying considering the college is on its way to autonomy, which we have been opposing. Autonomy would also mean that our college which is a minority institution, will no longer be under the protection of DU.” The principal John Varghese could not be reached for a comment.
The National Students' Union of India and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad condemned the incident.
