Even as the per capita income in Delhi registered an all-time high of Rs.2.41 lakh in 2014-15, the number of industrial units in the Capital grew by 18.35 per cent during 2005 to 2013. However, the total employment during the period declined by over 12 per cent and the number of unemployed people in Delhi stood at 2.66 lakh in 2012.
Citing these figures, the Economic Survey of Delhi 2014-15, tabled in the State Assembly on Wednesday, said there were 8.93 lakh total establishments operating in Delhi as per the Sixth Economic Census conducted in 2013, which was 18.35 per cent more than the number of establishments found in the Fifth Economic Census conducted in 2005.
The income of registered manufacturing units increased from Rs.3,676 crore in 2007-08 to Rs.6,642 crore in 2013-14. The advance estimates during 2014-15 was expected at Rs.7,178 crore, said the survey.
Making a reference to the latest National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) data, the survey stated that the estimated number of unemployed people in Delhi was about 2.66 lakh in June 2012, constituting 4.46 per cent of the entire labour force in the Capital. The number of unemployed persons registered in employment exchanges increased from 6.36 lakh in 2004 to 9.12 lakh in 2013.
Poverty in Delhi came down to about 10 per cent of the total population in 2011-12 from over 14 per cent a year ago. According to the survey, there were 23.3 lakh people living below poverty line in 2009-10 while the number decreased to 16.96 lakh in 2011-12.
The survey pointed out that while the Capital had maintained its consistent revenue surplus in 2014-15, the Delhi Government had a fiscal deficit of Rs.221.25 crore during 2014-15, which was 0.049 per cent of Gross State Domestic Product as compared to all States’ estimated figure of 2.35 per cent of GDP during 2014-15.
The density of population in Delhi has increased from 9,340 persons per sq km in 2001 to 11,320 persons per sq km in 2011. According to the survey, Delhi is one of pioneer States in implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013. Over 17.68 lakh National Food Security smart cards have been issued to eligible households and all the digital cards are Aadhar-enabled.
Besides, Delhi has a wide network of health infrastructure comprising 95 hospitals, 1,389 dispensaries, 267 maternity homes, 973 polyclinics and 16 medical colleges.
