The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Monday said it would be spending a total of ₹2,500 crore, including ₹1,000 crore granted to it as it was awarded the tag of Institute of Eminence, in the next five years.
The institute said that the money would be spent on enhancing its research facilities, physical infrastructure and outreach in its journey towards being an Institute of Eminence.
IIT-Delhi director V. Ramgopal Rao said that the institute was working towards attracting foreign students. “Due to the structure of admission process [UG through JEE], initial attempts will be to target PhD students through fellowships and assistantships,” said Mr. Rao.
At the faculty level, he said, the institute wants to attract the best talent from across the globe by creating awareness on IIT’s research infrastructure and academic ecosystem. The institute is also looking to launch joint PhD programmes with a few reputed global universities.
Mr. Rao said that the university would aim at strengthening its industry connect by responding to the needs of the industry through teaching and research activities like industry-sponsored masters and PhD programmes, IIT dipoma programmes in areas of current interest and providing space in technology parks for entrepreneurial start-ups.
