With an aim to prepare students for jobs in the apparel industry, IGNOU’s School of Vocational Education and Training has launched a certificate programme in fashion design.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University said that there are many opportunities in the Indian apparel industry as it is a labour-intensive sector offering employment to approximately 4.5 crore people directly and six crore people indirectly.

The university said that India has become an apparel-sourcing destination for many international firms.

More jobs

The Textile Ministry aims to achieve $300 billion of textile exports by 2024-25 and create an additional 35 million jobs in the textile sector, said the university, adding that it was not possible to achieve the targets through existing formal training system.

“The course will help students develop basic knowledge and skills in pattern-making and sewing techniques, and develop basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of fashion design,” the university stated.
