‘Husband had suspected her of having married friend'

February 05, 2012 11:26 am | Updated 11:26 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Investigation into the sensational murder of a married woman and her minor son in Rohini here on Friday has revealed that her husband suspected her of having married her friend a month ago and allegedly killed her after he got a call from the man confirming it. The police, however, said on Saturday that it is yet to be established that the woman had married her friend.

Accused Nitin Maini, bedridden following an accident three years ago, purportedly told the police that his wife Sweta had hinted about her plans to marry her friend on January 3 and also made him give in writing that he would not object to it.

“On January 4, Sweta went to attend a jagran at the house of her friend in Dilshad Garden on returning from work. She wore a sari for the occasion and did not take her son along, which made Nitin suspect that she probably went to marry her friend. According to Nitin, he got a call from the man on February 3 saying that Sweta had married him and that proved to be the last straw,” said a senior police officer.

The police, however, said they were trying to verify his statement. “It has been found that Sweta had plans to re-marry after Nitin was paralysed in the accident and confided in her mother. But it is yet to be established that she had actually got married. We have questioned her friend, but he denies having made any call to Nitin on February 3. He claimed that it was Nitin who had called him up. We are verifying the facts.”

Nitin purportedly told the police that he murdered his son Garv as he was worried about his future and did not want him to end up doing petty jobs when he grew up. The police have ruled out the involvement of anyone besides Nitin in the case.

Nitin, who himself called up the Police Control Room claiming to have committed the murders, was found sitting on the bed alongside the bodies of his wife and son when a police team reached the spot. The room was bolted from inside and the police had to break it open to gain entry. Nitin allegedly stabbed himself with a pair of scissors in an attempt to end his life.

The post-mortem was conducted on Saturday, the police said.
