Hindu burial ground to come up in Dwarka

A Hindu burial ground will soon come up at Dwarka Sector 24, after a proposal was approved by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday.

The proposal was formed and approved based on a petition by an NGO, Basva International Centre, representing a demand of the Lingayat community in the city.

The community, predominant in Karnataka, has about 1,000 members residing in the Dwarka, the group petitioned.

“While culturally and religiously, members of the community are in harmony with many Hindu traditions, one of the major deviations in religious practices pertains to the disposal of body as Lingayats or Veerashaivas bury the dead as an established tradition,” the proposal stated. It argued that lack of a burial ground in Delhi subjected the community to inconvenience of transporting bodies to Karnataka and other neighbouring States for burial.

About 2,000 sq ft of area, next to the children’s burial ground at the SDMC-run crematorium in Dwarka, is being alloted for the purpose on humanitarian ground.
