Equipped to move swiftly in all weather conditions, even when it’s pitch-dark, the Delhi Traffic Police on Tuesday added 11 hi-tech interceptor vans to its fleet to add more teeth to its anti-rash driving initiative. The force now has 22 such vehicles.
The interceptors were flagged off by Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik from India Gate.
According to a senior police officer, the interceptors can track speeding vehicles through laser-based cameras. He added that the cameras work in all light conditions and produce a photo of the speeding vehicles’ registration number and GPS coordinates of the location where the violation took place.
This feature will ensure accurate speed forensics record and will help investigators in the event of a speeding vehicle causing an accident.
At all major roads
“We will deploy these interceptors vehicles on all major roads. We often get complaints of speeding on busy local roads. The new system will add teeth to technology-based prosecution. The laser-based cameras can generate a challan in two seconds and identify a speeding vehicle in a lane full of vehicles,” said Mr. Patnaik.
Officers said the data stored in these interceptors will also include date and time stamp, vehicle image with registration plate and laser reticule. It will calculate by how much the driver has exceeded the permissible speed limit by measuring factors such as distance from the laser source, laser beam width and ID of the equipment.
The operating range of the lasers is between 25 and 1,000 metres. It is capable of detecting speed violation within one second . It also records a three-second video clip of the interaction.
“These interceptors are capable of capturing speed in the range of 0-250 kmph. A printout of the challan can be generated within 30 seconds,” said a senior police officer.
