The Delhi High Court on Monday imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 on AAP MLA Surinder Singh for filing a delayed reply to a petition filed against him by BJP leader Karan Singh Tanwar.

Imposing the cost, Joint Registrar (Judicial) Ashutosh Kumar asked the MLA to pay the amount to Mr. Tanwar.

The BJP leader in his petition had alleged that the MLA carries a fake graduation degree.

The MLA had claimed in the affidavit filed along with his nomination papers for the Delhi Assembly elections that he had graduated from Sikkim University.

Mr. Tanwar had asked in his petition how Mr. Singh graduated in 2012 when he was serving the National Security Guard (NSG) till 2011.

He alleged that mentioning wrong facts in the affidavit was violations of the Representation of People Act, 1951.

Mr. Tanwar filed the petition after Sikkim University in a reply to his RTI application said that it did not have any record in the name of Surinder Singh.

Submitting that the Mr. Singh deprived the voters of his constituency -- Delhi Cantonment -- their right to have full and complete information about his background and qualifications, Mr. Tanwar has sought setting aside of his election.
