HC: Close schools at unsafe places

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi government, Delhi Development Authority and the municipal bodies to ensure immediate closure of unrecognised schools functioning at unsafe places, as they may pose a threat to the safety of students.

In its order passed recently, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw reminded the government agencies of the provisions of the Right to Education Act, while directing them to expeditiously decide the matter of regularisation or change the norms for schools.

The Bench passed the order on a writ petition moved by NGO Social Jurist, which said the Directorate of Education had not taken any action to comply with the High Court’s 2008 orders prohibiting the functioning of any unrecognised school in the Capital.
